Former Pittsburgh Steeler Clark Haggans is serving nine days in the Westmoreland County Jail for a 2011 drunken driving sentence.
As part of his work release agreement, Haggans will pay Westmoreland County a little more than $700 to serve his sentence at the Hempfield Jail.
Haggans gets to leave in the mornings and report back to the jail in the evening to sleep.
Haggans said he was at a concert with his wife when he got a call from their babysitter, saying their 5-year-old daughter was having trouble breathing.
"The sitter was panicked. I had been drinking, and my wife was planning on driving home from the concert, but my wife was wandering around. I needed to get home to my daughter immediately. I felt that my only choice was to drive home. In hindsight, I should have found another way home, and I take full responsibility for my actions," said Haggans.
When Haggans completes his jail sentence, he’ll also have to serve a 36-day home detention.
Haggans now plays for the Arizona Cardinals.
