Fueling Jobs: WPXI’s 1-Hour Energy Special

PITTSBURGH —

Energy represents almost 15 percent of western Pennsylvania’s economic output and the sector employs about 100,000 people locally. Moving into the future, the demand for qualified people to fill jobs in the energy sector is expected to accelerate rapidly. The demand for this new, local work force encompasses a wide range of vocational and educational backgrounds from executives to skilled laborers.

But where are these jobs and how can workers prepare themselves to move into the rapidly expanding energy arena? WPXI-TV tackled these questions in a locally-produced special, “Fueling Jobs,” which first aired Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on WPXI.

“Fueling Jobs” will have encore airings on PCNC on Thursday at 9 p.m., Friday at 9 p.m. and Saturday at 10 p.m.

The program will be moderated by Bill Flanagan, host of WPXI’s popular “Our Region’s Business,” a weekly business program that focuses on the local economy. Flanagan is also Executive Vice President of Corporate Relations for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

“Fueling Jobs” will focus on employment opportunities within the seven sub-sectors of energy related industries, all of which play a major part in our local economy; coal, natural gas, nuclear power, solar energy, wind energy, energy transmission and distribution, and intelligent (green) building. Each of these sectors will be discussed by local industry experts with an eye on passing along actionable information on employment opportunities within each segment.

The program will also address the issue of how young people still in school and displaced workers in search of employment retraining can acquire the necessary skills to compete for jobs in the burgeoning energy sector.

Presenting sponsor for the program is Kroff Incorporated, one of the fastest-growing, full-service water treatment companies in the United States. Headquartered here in Pittsburgh, Kroff empowers companies in metal fabrication, mining, oil and gas exploration, water and waste water treatment and many other industries.

NOTE: The scheduled episode of “Minute to Win It” for Wednesday will instead air on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 3:30pm.
