Giant Eagle Supermarkets Offering Free 14-Day Supplies Of Generic Antibiotics

O'HARA, Pa. —

Giant Eagle plans to offer 10 commonly prescribed antibiotics available free of charge in the stores' pharmacies beginning Thursday.

The supermarket chain said it wants to ease families' worries over prescription drug costs.

The drugs are available in 46 dosages. They are amoxicillin, ampicillin, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline hyclate, erythromycin, penicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, tetracycline, and bacitracin.

The drugs offered are commonly used to treat things like strep throat, ear infections and pneumonia. They were all previously on the store's list of drugs available for $4.

There are no limits on the number of prescriptions customers can fill and the promotion covers new prescriptions and refills.

Giant Eagle has 223 stores in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Maryland. There are pharmacies in 210 of those stores.
