Unlike other more scientifically based procedures, no one is really quite sure how a staple can help people lose weight.

Millions have tried diets like the Zone, Atkins, and South Beach.

Others have done something more drastic like having gastric bypass surgery.

And now there is ear stapling.

Registered Nurse Robin Gibson, owner of Acu-Staple, has been doing the stapling sessions all over the country..

Teshsa Ams said it helped her drop 10 pounds and Lisa Moses said it helped her slim down enough to get into her 14- year-old daughter's jeans.

Last weekend dozens of weight loss hopefuls lined up in Pittsburgh for the same thing.

Gibson said the procedure costs $60 for a staple in each ear and works like acupuncture.

Gibson explained that putting a staple in the right spot can cut down on stress, tension, and cravings.

"Seventy-five percent of my patients complain of nausea when they over eat," said Gibson.

UPMC Dietary Specialist Leslie Boncee said people may be using the staples as a crutch -- something they hope will give them willpower.

Even Gibson acknowledges the procedure doesn't work on everyone.

There is the possibility of infection so consumers are warned to clean the staples twice a day.

Consumer reporter Becky Thompson will be following the progress of those who got the Acu-Staple and talk to them again in five weeks.
