How Much Radiation Does Your Cell Phone Emit?

PITTSBURGH —

Is your cell phone hazardous to your health?

A new list is out by the Washington, D.C., Environmental Working Group, and it ranks cell phones in term of radiation.

Channel 11 News went to downtown Pittsburgh on Wednesday to find out if people knew about the list and if anyone had cell phones that were on it.

“I feel glad my phone didn’t make the list. That’s good,” said Jessica Turik, who owns a T-Mobile Sidekick.

The best cell phones for low-radiation emissions are the Samsung Impression, Model SGH A877; the Motorola Razor V8; and the Samsung Impression, model SGH T229.

The phones with the highest radiation emissions are the Motorola Moto, model VU204; the T-Mobile My Touch, model 3G semicolon and the Kyocera Jack, model S1300.

Experts said the verdict is still out on whether radiation from cell phones can be directly linked to cancer.

"Studies show if you use your cell phone close to your head, there's an increased risk of cancer," said Heath Flurig, a Carnegie Mellon University professor.

Cell phone users Channel 11 talked to said they don’t plan on taking any chances.

“I’ll use a Bluetooth,” said Alexis, who owns a BlackBerry.

Channel 11 News asked Flurig if headsets work.

"The headsets really work. Studies show if you have the headset away from your ear, even 6 inches, it can reduce potential problems," said Flurig.
