Hundreds Gather At Vigil To Remember Mt. Lebo Mom

MT. LEBANON, Pa. —

Hundreds of people gathered in Mt. Lebanon Thursday night to remember a mother killed when she was struck by a sport utility vehicle while jogging earlier this week.

A vigil for Lisa Styles, 36, was held at the corner of Beadling and Washington roads. Police said Styles was jogging along Washington Road with her 1-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son in a stroller when she was hit by the SUV on Wednesday. The children were not seriously hurt.

There was little standing room across from the ever-growing makeshift memorial where a tearful crowd of more than 400 gathered to pay their respects. Some of the people didn't know Styles, but wanted to show their support.

"I have an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old, and I'm president of a Mom's Club. It really struck home," Danielle Haugh said.

Two close friends, as well as the pastor of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where Styles’ 1-year-old daughter was recently baptized, spoke lovingly about the woman who's greatest joy was being a mother.

After each candle was lit, attendees paused for a moment of silence.

The organizer of the event said Styles’ death is a tragic reminder of what can happen when a suspected impaired driver takes the wheel.

Police have filed two charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance against the driver, Benjamin Cope, 20.

Cope could face more serious charges, including vehicular homicide, since Styles died from the injuries she suffered in the accident.

Mt. Lebanon police said they still have a number of witnesses to interview, and it could be weeks before they decide on additional charges.
