Internships are available in our news, web, creative services, programming and sales departments.
College students must be a junior or senior to apply.
Email your resume to webstaff@wpxi.com. Make the subject: Fall Internship.
In your email, please include which department/departments interest you.
Qualified candidates will likely be interviewed. Interviews will take place a month or two before the new semester begins.
The WPXI-TV departments listed below each take between one and six interns per semester.
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTIONS:
Creative Services/Studio 11:
Interns will learn how to write television promos and press releases. They'll help with station contests, events, promo shoots and commerical production shoots. They'll also log breaking news.
News:
Interns will assist the assignment desk editors by making and answering phone calls and updating the assignment file. Interns may have the opportunity be on the scene of news events with photographers and reporters and assist writers and producers with the newscasts. WPXI hopes interns develop their writing and news gathering skills and leave with an understanding of how the newsroom works. Sports and weather internships are available as well.
Programming:
Regular intern tasks will include but not be limited to logging of tapes; program research; interaction with the public and WPXI staff by telephone, e-mail and regular mail; attendance and participation in staff and small group meetings; scriptwriting; assisting producers on remote at shoots; assisting producers in the editing of commercials, programs and program segments; assisting producers in the preparation of programs, program segments or commercials for air; music scoring for commercials and programs; operation of computers and basic office equipment; planning of remote and studio shoots; coordination of live events, including interaction with the public at these events.
Sales:
Interns will have the fun opportunity to help the sales team with social media, concert announcements and contests. Interns will also be members of the support team and help assist three local sales managers, one national sales manager and the general sales manager. They will also help assist local sales people (18) with writing and setting up sales proposals, client presentations, letters and memos, including mail merge letters for co-op. They will also help with phone coverage for the entire staff, pull faxes, be the backup person in making/changing staff travel arrangements, work on special projects and cover the front desk if needed.
Web:
Interns will learn all about the multimedia world. They’ll learn how to write, shoot video, take photos and edit for WPXI.com. They’ll post news, sports, high school and entertainment content on the website. A big part of the internship will be helping cover entertainment events for See & Be Seen by taking photos and helping the web team with event and celebrity interviews. Depending on the semester, interns could help plan the station’s Skylights Media Day event, take photos at high school football games, help take photos and shoot video at high school musicals and help with high school contests. Interns will also help with WPXI’s social media efforts.
