Jaguar XJ series

Impressions: The XJ is a modern interpretation of a classic British luxury sedan. Much of the car's great looks and key design elements are a throwback to the past, including the split grille, quad headlights and gently sloping rear deck. Jaguar traditionalists will still find a cozy interior trimmed with walnut and softer leather this year, but it's interlaced with the latest technology to keep this big car current and competitive. Underneath, a light-weight all-aluminum monocoque (frameless) chassis houses an air-suspension, the ride quality of which is influenced by computer-controlled shock absorbers that constantly adapt to road conditions. Amazingly, the base XJ is 200 pounds lighter than a two-door Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. Catering to large-and-in-charge buyers, Jaguar offers five models of the top-of-the-line XJ, including three five-inch-longer-long-wheelbase versions, two with 300-horsepower 4.2-liter V8 and the other with a supercharged 400-horsepower 4.2-liter V8 (called the Super V8). All models are connected to six-speed automatic transmissions that boast normal and sport-shift ranges. Premium-grade amenities include dual-zone climate control (four-zone optional), power moonroof, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power front seats, rain-sensing wipers and a trunk that automatically latches. At the top end of the earning scale, the $92,000 (including delivery to the dealership) Super V8 includes performance brakes out of the hotrod XJR (which is $10,500 less than the Super V8), navigation system, 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, rear DVD entertainment system with two screens, front and rear parking sensors, power-adjustable rear bench and a 320-watt, 12-speaker Alpine audio system.
