Judge: Pittsburgh Police Must Give G-20 Reports To Review Board

PITTSBURGH —

An Allegheny County judge said Pittsburgh police must turn over police reports and other documents pertaining September's Group of 20 economic summit to the Citizen Police Review Board.

The board said it needs the documents to thoroughly and fairly investigate citizen complaints of police misconduct. Police made nearly 200 arrests, mostly when protesters and marchers clashed with police in Lawrenceville and near the University of Pittsburgh campus in Oakland on Sept. 24-25.

The city had objected, saying the documents were protected by federal law because the summit was a "national special security event."

City officials said they will abide by the judge’s order.

"We were concerned primarily with documents and communications that were sensitive in terms of our efforts to keep the community safe,” Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. “But the judge ruled and we'll comply with his ruling."

Judge R. Stanton Wettick said if the city believes certain documents are privileged it should prepare a log explaining, in detail, why such documents should not be released.
