Impressions: The Spectra four-door sedan and wagon are cars that help redefine style and content in a category that often compromises both. The Spectra and Spectra5 (wagon) share a platform with the Hyundai Elantra, but have completely different personalities. The current-generation model, which arrived early in 2004, receives new front and rear styling for 2007, revised interior details, new wheels and the usual 138-horsepower Elantra-shared 2.0-liter four-cylinder motor backed by a five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. The base sedans, although no doubt a popular choice because of its generous helping of standard equipment (including six airbags), do not produce the same visual statement or driving characteristics as the up-level SX model with its sport-tuned suspension, front and rear spoilers, side cladding, black mesh grille, racy drilled-metal foot pedals and larger wheels. Of course, this is the only way the sporty Spectra5 wagon arrives, although there are a number of option packages you can add. Unchanged is Kia's five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty.
