The medical examiner said a 15-year-old Chartiers Valley High School student was killed in a crash in Collier Township Wednesday night.
Investigators said Scott Katonka, of Carnegie, and four other teenagers were inside of the Mazda 6 at the time of the crash.
Chartiers Valley School District officials posted a message on their website saying, "We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the families impacted by last night's tragedy. Beginning at 10 a.m. counselors will be available at the high school."
Katonka was a rising sophomore at the school.
Friends of the teenagers involved in the crash stopped by the site of the accident Wednesday night and Thursday morning to drop off flowers and cards.
Classmates said the news of Katonka's death came as a shock.
"When I heard Scott died I couldn't handle it. I couldn’t realize Scott was dead," said friend Tom Kovach.
Allegheny County police said Katonka was sitting in the back seat of the car with four others ranging in age from 15 to 17 years old. Investigators said Katonka and another teen were ejected from the car.
Police said the 16-year-old driver was traveling downhill, lost control and hit a tree. Investigators said speed was a factor in the crash.
Allegheny County police said the driver got her license a month ago and was violating junior license rules by having the other teens in the car.
The other people in the car at the time of the crash were not seriously hurt.
