MONONGALIA COUNTY, W.Va. —
Crews will return to the scene Monday of a plane crash that killed one person in Monongalia County, W.Va., Friday.
Investigators said the twin-engine plane went down around 11 a.m. about 8 miles east of Morgantown, near Cheat Lake.
The pilot was the only person in the plane, officials said.
Members from the National Transportation Safety Board will begin removing debris from the crash site for further investigation.
Channel 11 has learned that the crash came dangerously close to hitting a campground. Witnesses said they heard the plane before it crashed.
“It was real loud, and we felt the ground shake,” said Shawn Hardin.
“We heard this loud explosion, and I guessed the plane went down,” said Jim Ruffner.
The Monongalia County sheriff told Channel 11 that the plane had just left Fayette County.
“It had passengers on the plane that had made a stop at Nemacolin,” said Sheriff Al Kisner.
The passengers were dropped off, Kisner said.
As the plane went down, it clipped a communications tower, but federal investigators don’t know what caused it to crash.
The name of the pilot has not been released.
