HICKORY TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

A group of young children were evacuated from a Washington County day care Tuesday after teachers suspected a gas leak.

When Channel 11 News arrived at Precious Years along Wabash Avenue in Hickory Township about 1 p.m. Tuesday, about two dozen kids were being allowed back inside.

The Mount Pleasant Township fire chief said teachers were taking the children out of the school for a walk, and when they left they thought they smelled gas and heard a leak.

The chief said the teachers erred on the side of caution and called 911. Fire officials inspected the inside and outside of the building and didn’t find a leak, officials said.

Columbia Gas crews were called to the building and found a very small leak in an outside pipe. The leak was small enough that it was determined to not be a threat, and crews began fixing it.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
