PITTSBURGH —

Pittsburgh police and Animal Control officers rescued two dogs Tuesday afternoon from a West End home that neighbors said have been living without food for years.

Officers arrived at the Sagamore Street home Tuesday and found two starving pit bulls chained up in the back yard.

Animal Control officers immediately took the dogs to get medical treatment.

“They had no food or water. There was no straw to keep them warm,” Officer Christine Luffey said. “We learned from many neighbors that they were rarely fed and lived outside.”

Neighbors told Channel 11 News that they don’t know if the dogs have ever been inside the home.

Police said the homeowner, Erica Montgomery, was charged with animal cruelty.
