Officials shut light-rail and river traffic about 5 p.m. Friday after Port Authority of Allegheny County said a barge struck the Panhandle Bridge between Downtown and Station Square.
Port Authority of Allegheny County stopped running trains between First Avenue Station in Downtown and South Hills Junction in Beltzhoover.
Port Authority said it was working to run shuttles between the two T stations. It said riders also could take the following buses between the Smithfield Street bus lane south of Sixth Avenue in Downtown and South Hills Junction: 39 Brookline, 40 Mt. Washington, 41 Bower Hill, 44 Knoxville, Y1 Large Flyer, Y45 Baldwin Flyer, Y46 Elizabeth Flyer, Y47 Curry Flyer and Y49 Prospect Flyer.
Authorities also closed a 1-mile stretch of the Monongahela River in the area of the bridge while crews inspected it.
Port Authority said the bridge could be closed for several hours.
