MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. (AP) —

A Pittsburgh-area man has been jailed on charges he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in the home they once shared before unsuccessfully trying to kill himself with natural gas fumes.

Daniel Sheets, 25, of Stowe Township, was arrested and arraigned Saturday. He faces a preliminary hearing on charges of criminal homicide and risking a catastrophe in the Nov. 14 shooting of 21-year-old Elizabeth Cannon and his subsequent suicide attempt.

Authorities said police found suicide notes in Sheets' room, along with a bullet on which he carved his initials and Cannon's, separated by a heart symbol.

Police said several of Cannon's friends said they heard Sheets claim he had a bullet with Cannon's name on it.
