A Carlow University student was suspended after he wore makeup to class last week that mimicked the Joker from the movie “Batman.”
Channel 11’s Alan Jennings reported that Christian Smith attended class on Sept. 27 in full makeup and refused to leave when his professor asked him to.
Jennings reported that Smith claimed he didn’t have to leave because women in the class also had makeup on.
According to the criminal complaint, university police were called and he was escorted out of the classroom.
The criminal complaint alleged Smith head-butted an officer and spit on another.
Smith claimed the officers were the aggressors and that they forcibly arrested him for no reason.
“I’m just thankful that I wasn’t harmed. Right now, I just want to return to campus. Getting back to class -- right now, that’s my biggest objective right now,” Smith said.
Smith’s attorney said Smith’s an arts and creative services major who was going to a comic book convention.
“This is probably one of the most egregious actions I've seen by the police at Carlow University in this kind of situation,” defense attorney Phil DiLucente said.
The university would not comment on the matter saying, “Carlow University is confident in the actions of university police in protecting the rights and privileges of the student involved, and ensuring the safety of its students and the campus community. In order to protect the privacy of the student, we cannot comment further regarding internal actions taken.”
Smith’s attorney said they’re working on getting the charges dismissed and also looking into filing a lawsuit against the university.
