Center Twp. man made more than $1.3M smuggling gun parts to Philippines
PITTSBURGH (AP) —
A Beaver County man has pleaded guilty to smuggling military-style rifle parts to people in the Philippines for more than $1.3 million.
Federal prosecutors said 38-year-old Jack Michaluk smuggled M-16 and M-14 parts and ammunition by working with people in California, Illinois and Texas from 2006 until last year and labeling the weapons as auto parts.
Prosecutors said Michaluk was paid more than $833,000 total for 148 shipments to two Philippine men and $485,000 for 45 shipments to a third man.
Prosecutors have not said why Michaluk smuggled the rifle parts, or what those in the Philippines did with them.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office didn't immediately respond to requests for comment and Michaluk's defense attorney didn't immediately return a call Friday.
