Charges were reduced Wednesday for a man accused of threatening police officers on the South Side earlier this month.

Investigators said Nicholas Murphy never threw a punch, but screamed threats at officers when they responded to his home on Friday.

According to police, Murphy was highly intoxicated and told them they should die.

“This is clearly an alcohol-related situation. Officer Myers has agreed to reduce the charges under the condition that my client seeks alcohol treatment,” defense attorney Jimmy Sheetz said.

Murphy faces disorderly conduct and harassment charges. He will be released from jail Wednesday afternoon.

Police said if Murphy doesn’t complete the AA classes, the original assault charges will be re-filed.
