PITTSBURGH —

Demolition has begun on a North Side church that, for years, members fought to preserve

Channel 11 News was there as a private contractor began tearing down St. Nicholas Church on East Ohio Street.

The church closed in 2004 and cost the parish about $1,800 a month to maintain.

The decision to tear down the structure was made after an engineer determined it was a safety threat to traffic on Route 28.
