Diocese wants quick trial in challenging federal health mandate for birth control services

PITTSBURGH —

The Diocese of Pittsburgh wants to challenge a federal health mandate that would require it to offer birth control services to employees.

Our news exchange partners at TribLIVE report the diocese along with Catholic Charities and The Catholic Cemeteries Association said the uncertainty of whether they'll have to comply with the mandate is wreaking havoc with their negotiations with their health insurance administrator.

The diocese said it is also affecting budget preparations and employment process.

If a judge grants the diocese's request, a temporary injunction would be but in place that would decide the issue immediately.

The diocese and more than 40 other Catholic groups nationwide are challenging the mandate.
