Elderly Washington Co. woman hit by van dropping her off dies

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Pa. —

A 96-year-old woman, who was severely injured when she was hit by a van that dropped her off at her home from grocery shopping, has died, authorities said.

Rose Anderson was unloading groceries outside her home in the 800 block of Henderson Avenue in Canton at about 12:15 p.m. when the Washington County Transit Authority van rolled backwards over her, police said.

Anderson died at UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland early Saturday morning.

"She was a wonderful neighbor. Never bothered anybody." neighbor Joeanne Bruno told Channel 11 News. "She always had a kind word for anybody she came across. She was just the sweetest lady and never bothered a soul. She always had a kind wave for you."

The van was driven by Selena Verner, 35. Police said the transmission and emergency brake will be examined to determine if they were functioning properly.
