Family remembers fifth person dead after Armstrong Co. crash

SOUTH BEND TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

On Friday, a fifth person died from injuries sustained in a horrific head-on crash Wednesday night in South Bend Township.

The latest victim, Kent Smith, was 34 years old and leaves behind a son.

“He was a great guy, a great dad and was loved by so many people,” said Smith’s cousin Lindsay Burkett.

Smith and four friends were driving on Route 156 when a Mustang crossed the center line and hit them head-on.  The three teenagers in the Mustang and the driver of Smith's car were killed instantly.

“People are in such a hurry to go nowhere, and it’s not worth it.  So many families are affected by this,” said Burkett.

Smith, his girlfriend and another passenger were flown via helicopter to the hospital.  Doctors told Smith's family yesterday morning that he wouldn't make it.

Smith's girlfriend was also in the car.  She is in critical condition and underwent surgery Friday.

The two-vehicle crash was reported just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on Route 156 near Gobblers Run Road.

The teenagers in the Mustang were Brandon James Sulava, Brieyonah Marie Painter and Brandon Barr.

Crystal Kay Kelley, 41, was the driver of the other car and also died.  Authorities said her passengers were Smith, Robert Edward Kelley and Kristy Ann Schall.
