It’s been more than two decades since Pittsburgh Pirates fans have had the opportunity to purchase postseason merchandise, but that ended Tuesday morning.
Playoff hats, shirts and other items flew off the shelves at the Majestic Clubhouse Store at PNC Park starting at 9 a.m.
Pirates president Frank Coonelly told Channel 11’s Dave Bondy that Monday night’s victory was as much for the fans as it was the players.
“Last night was an opportunity for a lot of people to celebrate. They’ve been waiting for a long time and it’s been a long time since fans could buy a postseason shirt for the Pittsburgh Pirates,” Coonelly said.
Pirates fan Julie Cooper showed up at the store Tuesday morning to buy gear for herself, but also for friends and family who live out of state.
“It’s always been the Steelers and the Penguins. Now, we’re just so proud of our Pirates,” Cooper said.
Bobby Tavormina said he was 4 years old the last time the Pirates made the playoffs.
“I go to so many games a year and to finally see a winning team, it’s just crazy,” Tavormina said.
The Pirates aren’t sure yet if they’ll host any home playoff games, but if they do, Coonelly said it will be great for the team and the city.
“If we play deep into October, it will be great for the city to have all these visitors coming in here seeing our beautiful city and ballpark,” Coonelly said.
The Pirates will look for win No. 91 Tuesday night in Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m.
