McKEES ROCKS, Pa. – Black ice is being blamed for a fatal crash that shut down the McKees Rocks bridge early Thursday morning.

TRAFFIC: Current Conditions

The Stowe Township police chief said a man driving a sport utility vehicle hit black ice and slammed into a utility truck about 7:30 a.m.

The driver of the SUV died in the crash, police said. His name has not been released.

The truck driver was not injured.

Shortly before the accident, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement cautioning drivers about black ice on the roads.

"The road conditions were not the best," said Stowe Township Police Chief Frank Marciw. "It seemed a bit slick."

The bridge was shut down for about three hours in both directions as police investigated the deadly accident. Traffic was detoured through McKees Rocks, causing massive delays.

"I feel bad for McKees Rocks. We detoured everything to McKees Rocks and East Carson Street. It's brutal. There's nothing you can do in this type of situation," Marciw said.

The bridge has since reopened.
