Firefighters battle 3-alarm blaze in East Liberty

EAST LIBERTY, Pa. —

Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire in East Liberty Tuesday morning.

Crews were called to the fire in the 400 block of North Saint Clair Street about 6:35 a.m., a city emergency dispatch supervisor said.

The fire affected two homes. No one was hurt, the supervisor said.

Firefighters said quick-thinking neighbors helped saved lives.

"Someone came and banged on my door and said, 'There's a fire,'" said George Johnson.

Johnson said he didn't know that flames were just steps away from his home.

"I came to my door and I could see it. I had to push my dog out my back door then I grabbed my jacket and came out," said Johnson.

"The neighbors waking everybody up prevented a real tragedy here today," said assistant Pittsburgh fire chief Tom Cook.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
