Helium shortage raising costs for New Year's Eve parties

By Chris Cordt

TULSA, Okla. —

A massive helium shortage is costing New Year's Eve party planners.

Lynn Hannah owns Ehrles Party Supply with her husband Floyd.

She tells KRMG that the problem has been bad the last several months but is marginally better.

Hannah says she's used to getting a dozen tanks of helium each week. Lately, she's only able to get one.

Recently Ehrles' supplier has been able to bring an extra tank of helium.

The availability of helium isn't the only problem. Prices have gone up as well.

Hannah says that, years ago, a tank of helium cost $35. Now, that cost is up to nearly $200.

That translates into an increased cost of $3-4 for the average party.
