PITTSBURGH —
A woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death in the Hill District last year was found not guilty Thursday and says she now plans on moving on with her life.
Pittsburgh police had charged Ashley Wilson, 23, with homicide. She was accused of killing Marquis White, 22, during an argument at an apartment on Grove Street on May 22, 2011. He had been stabbed in the chest.
Wilson, who was seven months pregnant at the time, said she used the knife to defend herself.
Wilson told Channel 11’s Alan Jennings that sitting in a jail cell was “agonizing, lonely and frightful.”
“It was very scary thinking about not coming home to my daughter,” Wilson said. “Having to have her in there was the worst part for me.”
Wilson’s defense attorney, Phil Dilucente, said the jury believed her abusive boyfriend left her no choice.
"The only item she could even grab without him seeing was a knife. The knife was used to push off the alleged victim. So it's clearly a self-defense case," said Dilucente. “I knew this woman, who was pregnant at the time with this beautiful child, was telling me the truth and I felt obligated from that point on to represent her.”
Dilucente said the 911 call played to the jury helped prove Wilson acted in self defense.
"The jury picked on three things," Dilucente said. "One, that she immediately called 911. Two, that whenever the 911 operator asked her what happened she told her the truth and three, she actually assisted to stop the bleeding."
Wilson said she plans on moving on with her life by raising her daughter, Aniyah, and finishing college. She also wants to give advice to women in abusive relationships.
“Try to get out of it as soon as you can and you can try to wipe things out,” Wilson said.
White’s mother sent a statement to Channel 11 Friday afternoon. White said her son was never abusive to Ashley and that he was a polite, mild-mannered young man.
Partial transcript of 911 call:
911 Dispatcher: Is the knife still in his chest?
Wilson: No, sit down!
911 Dispatcher: Get a dry cloth and try to apply pressure to stop the bleeding.
911 Dispatcher: I need you to calm down and answer some questions so we can get the help there, okay?
Wilson: Are they on their way?
911 Dispatcher: They're on their way.
911 Dispatcher: Where's the person that stabbed him?
Wilson: We were fighting.
911 Dispatcher: OK, who was he fighting with?
Wilson: Me
911 Dispatcher: OK, what did you stab him with?
Wilson: A kitchen knife.
911 Dispatcher: Where's your boyfriend at? Is he still conscious?
Wilson: Yes he's still conscious but he looks like he's going out. Please hurry up!
Wilson: Marquis, just please stay with me. Don't leave your daughter!
Wilson: Marquis. Marquis! Oh my God. Lord, please be with me. Where they at?
Wilson: Oh my God. I think he's dead.
