The retail rush is winding down, but the deals are still going strong online in advance of “Free Shipping Day” on Wednesday.
Channel 11’s Katherine Amenta found out it’s more than just one day of savings.
When it comes to online holiday shopping, Stephanie Panach has a simple rule about free shipping.
“If I don’t get it, I generally don’t buy,” Panach said.
Even though free shipping now has its own holiday, it’s pretty much expected throughout the holidays.
According to freeshipping.org, last year, free shipping was the most important factor for online shoppers.
Roberto Croce, the senior vice president of merchandising for the Pittsburgh-based American Eagle Outfitters, said he understands the growing trend.
“If you’re going to make a decision, especially when it comes down to an extra couple dollars, you’re going to make the decision to go with the brand that ships for free,” Croce said.
Amenta reported more than 700 retailers have pledged to offer free shipping on all orders placed on Dec. 18, and promise they’ll arrive by Dec. 24.
That means companies have to miss out on shipping fees for millions of packages -- something Croce said he’s OK with.
"Anything we can do to engage that customer and also give them a benefit, we look to do that,” Croce said.
Amenta said a helpful hint to keep an eye on as Christmas approaches is to be careful of extra fees for guaranteed Christmas delivery.
