Johnstown police shooting victim wasn't DUI
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —
Authorities said a man wasn't under the influence of alcohol or drugs when he was fatally shot by Johnstown police as he drove toward the scene where they were arresting a bar shooting suspect.
Investigators added that a passenger in the dead man's car was the victim of the bar shooting.
Cambria County First Assistant District Attorney Heath Long said police still don't know what prompted Elip Cheatham, 27, to accelerate his car toward police and a woman they had in custody. Police said the woman had driven the bar shooting suspect away from the scene before police stopped their car.
Three Johnstown officers who fired shots at Cheatham's approaching car remain on paid suspension.
Cheatham was hit with several bullets and died of one that hit him in the chest.
