Parkway East reopens after landslide forces traffic to 1 lane

PITTSBURGH —

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said traffic was reduced to a single lane on Friday on the Parkway East after a landslide.

Traffic: Current Conditions

PennDOT said all but one of the westbound lanes of Interstate 376 approaching the Squirrel Hill Tunnel were closed after the slide caused trees to fall into the roadway near the tunnel entrance.

The slide snarled the morning rush hour, keeping some drivers at a stand-still for hours.

"The rain soaked that hillside, the clay sub-base underneath. When the top soil, the clay, gets wet it gets slippery and if you look at the pictures you can see where the clay slid away, and top soil came down and brought some trees with it,"  said PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi.

All lanes reopened at 3 p.m.
