BEECHVIEW, Pa. —
Police said they believe a man shot his mother several times then turned the gun on himself early Tuesday morning in Beechview.
Pittsburgh police said the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m.
Police said Henry Sunder, 55, called police telling them that he had just shot his mom at a house on Broadway Avenue. While the line was still open, police said the dispatcher heard more gunshots.
"911 received a call from a man inside a home in the 200 block of Broadway that said he had just shot his mother and he was awaiting for police to arrive to kill him. 911 later thought that they had heard a gunshot come over the telephone," said Pittsburgh police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki.
When officers arrived Elizabeth Sunder, 73, was found inside of the home with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to nearby hospital for treatment.
Investigators said Elizabeth Sunder was shot five times in the eye, arm and stomach. She is expected to survive but may lose sight in one eye, police said.
Henry Sunder was found dead on the home's porch. Officers said he had just lost his job and was despondent.
Mt. Lebanon School District spokeswoman Cissy Bowman said Henry Sunder was terminated from his job as a custodian on May 7.
