A man who was arrested last week after police said he broke into a storage container and stole a case of cakes that were to be distributed for free at a promotional event in Market Square faced a judge Monday.
Buddy Valastro, star of the TV show "Cake Boss," visited Market Square April 2 to give away 10,000 cakes to Pittsburgh fans. The event was free and open to the public -- you simply had to wait in line to receive a cake.
According to police, during the event, a staff member spotted William Davenport stealing some of the cakes and alerted police.
Officers responded and arrested Davenport, 52, while he was in possession of four cakes valued at about $27 each, police said. Davenport told the officers he was intoxicated and apologized for stealing the cakes.
On Monday, Davenport pleaded the charges against him down to disorderly conduct.
He was also ordered to pay $550 restitution for stealing Amie Hackimer’s laptop and pawning it.
“I’m almost kind of glad he (took the cakes) because it got him caught for things that were a lot more expensive that he’s taken,” Hackimer said.
Davenport remains in police custody on several probation violations.
