McKEES ROCKS, Pa. —

Police arrested a man Sunday accused of stealing a car and trying to flee from authorities.

McKees Rocks police chief Robert Cifrulak said he’s proud of the two officers who chased the suspect, especially officer Zack Martsolf.

“It was a very commendable effort on his part,” Cifrulak said.

McKees Rocks police officers Martsolf and Steve Maritz were on routine patrol when they saw Troy Naylor, 23, try to hit a man with a stolen car in the Shoppes at Chartiers Crossing plaza in Esplen.

“He saw the driver forced out of the car and heard the driver screaming, ‘Hey, give me my car back,’” Cifrulak said.

The officers said they then began chasing Naylor, who was driving the stolen car, along Stanhope Street and onto West Carson Street. The officers said Naylor reached speeds of almost 100 mph.

According to the police report, Naylor crashed into a barrier near the West End Circle exit ramp and then let the car reverse into the officer’s car as he fled the scene on foot.

Cifrulak said officer Martsolf was hit by the car, but still chased after Naylor. Martsolf eventually captured him and Naylor was arrested, according to police.

“He certainly earned the respect of his fellow officers,” Cifrulak said.

Naylor was taken to Allegheny County Jail and is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault on a police officer, fleeing or attempting to elude police, driving under the influence and driving under suspension. Officials said Naylor will likely face additional charges as well.
