A man was convicted of aggravated assault on Wednesday after he beat an off-duty officer outside of a South Side bar in December 2010.
William Moreno sucker punched off-duty Pittsburgh police Officer Michael Murray after Murray asked him and a friend to stop taunting another patron at the Polish Army Veterans Association.
Surveillance video showed Moreno beating Murray to the ground, causing a fractured skull, a broken leg and a chipped tooth.
The incident happened outside of the Jane Street bar after a Steelers game.
Violent bar fights have plagued the South Side for years and City Councilman Bruce Kraus said he has taken it upon himself to stop incidents like this one from happening again.
"They beat him pretty badly, and as I understand it, they fractured his skull, broke his leg, and he was off of work for quite a while," Kraus said.
Kraus said he has organized a group of public officials, including District Attorney Stephen Zappala, who are working to bring the fighting to an end.
