Neighbors say bugs, sewage, garbage among several problems at Brighton Heights home

PITTSBURGH —

Neighbors are trying to get a house in Pittsburgh’s Brighton Heights neighborhood torn down because of the bugs, sewage and garbage coming from the home.

Those who live near the home said the house’s smell and conditions are horrendous and they haven’t seen the owner in weeks.

Ashley Bowser and Kelly Kasbee are two neighbors who said the house on Hubbard Street is causing them numerous problems.

“We are dealing with bugs, garbage, maggots. I can’t take it anymore,” Bowser said.

According to Bowser, the property is also a health hazard for her and her 4-year-old daughter.

She said she’s sent several complaints to the County Health Department, but has had no progress.

“The yard is disgusting, there’s garbage everywhere,” Kasbee said.

The homeowner, Gloria Novak, said she’s been out of town and left someone else in charge of bringing the house up to code.

Novak said she didn’t know about a Craigslist ad listing the house as a discount rental property in need of repairs.

Health department officials have not commented on the situation.
