PITTSBURGH —

Pittsburgh police have charged a man with wounding an officer who tripped and fell while chasing the man from a traffic stop, before the suspect was critically wounded by that officer and another who returned fire.

Eighteen-year-old Dante Bonner remained at UPMC Presbyterian hospital Monday and was charged with assault on a police officer and carrying an unlicensed firearm, among other crimes, during the incident about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police say Officer Christopher Kertis chased Bonner when he ran away after police stopped a vehicle over at the Port Authority East Busway Parking Lot in East Liberty. Police say Kertis tripped over a parking barrier, breaking both his wrists, before he was shot twice in the leg while prone.

Kertis and Officer Charles Thomas returned fire, hitting Bonner in the torso several times.
