PITTSBURGH -- Police said a mother and father from Pittsburgh have been charged with kidnapping their own son.
Gregory McKenith, 2, had been missing since October when his parents were ordered to give him into the custody of Children, Youth and Family Services.
Police said when the order was given, McKenith's parents never turned him over to CYF.
The boy's father, Gregory McKenith Sr. turned himself in to deputies on Tuesday night. He is facing kidnapping and child endangerment charges.
Deputies continued to search for the boy and his mother, Darnisha Mills. Mills also faces kidnapping charges.
Police said Mills and the boy were located in Michigan Wednesday afternoon.
A woman who works for Focus Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization that helps families in need in the Hill District, said she knows Mills and McKenith.
“They used to come here for help,” the woman said. “They used to get food and clothing for their baby. They were very good people. They took very good care of that child. He came here every day dressed well. He wasn’t being abused or anything of that nature.”
According to the criminal complaint, Mills and her 2-year-old son left a motel in Baldwin on Monday just hours before police arrived.
