WILKINSBURG, Pa. —
Parents in Wilkinsburg are concerned after they said their children are forced to walk past a sex offender’s home on their way to school.
Wilkinsburg police told Channel 11’s Jodine Costanzo that the man is within his rights to live where he does. However, the parents said they should have been notified.
“I’ve been on edge about my children because that’s not a secret you keep,” concerned parent Bonita Blackwell said.
Blackwell said she found out on Facebook that a Megan’s Law sex offender lives across the street from her children’s elementary school, Kelly Elementary on Kelly Avenue.
“That really blew my mind,” Blackwell said.
Wilkinsburg police said there’s no law prohibiting the man from living where he does, and he’s properly registered. Authorities said they’ve notified everyone required by law.
School districts are under no obligation to inform parents, but Blackwell thinks parents have a right to know.
“We’re not trying to violate his rights, but I feel we have rights, as parents, to know this dangerous person is right across the street from our school,” Blackwell said.
Wilkinsburg School District has not commented on the issue.
