MONROEVILLE, Pa. —
Authorities have identified the 49-year-old man who died after being struck by a police cruiser Thursday night in Monroeville.
The medical examiner said Michael Barnes was struck while he was crossing Monroeville Boulevard Thursday around 7:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Forbes Regional Hospital.
Police shut down part of the street while homicide detectives investigated the scene. It has since reopened to traffic.
People who live at the Northern Pike Garden Apartments said Barnes is in the area often because he’s friends with someone who works there.
The officer, who submitted blood for testing, was placed on administrative leave per police policy, Monroeville police Chief Steven Pascarella said. He did not identify the officer.
Detectives said the officer was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the accident.
There is no pedestrian walkway, street lights or traffic control signals where the accident occurred.
The accident remains under investigation.
