Pittsburgh schools chief scraps single-sex school

PITTSBURGH —

The head of Pittsburgh's public school system recommends ending single-gender classes after the American Civil Liberties Union threatened legal action.

The ACLU and the Women's Law Project objected to the single-gender program at George Westinghouse Academy because they said students were being assigned to a single-sex education environment based on where they lived.

Superintendent Linda Lane says she doesn't believe the school's arrangement violates any rules but a costly defense would detract from the goal of giving students a quality education.

Lane says staff training issues played a role in her recommendation.

Lane says she'll recommend the board vote on the changes later this month.
