Authorities announce 20 arrests in West End drug ring investigation
Police announced Wednesday that they arrested 20 people in connection with a West End drug ring investigation.
Authorities began investigating drug use in Sheraden and Crafton Heights in January after receiving complaints from residents, officials said.
“We wanted to send a clear message to drug dealers and drug traffickers that we’re serious,” Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said at a press conference at Woodlow and Crucible streets in Crafton Heights. “We’re taking this activity seriously. We’re going to catch up with you eventually.”
Police arrested 17 adults and two juveniles, and seized four vehicles, more than $10,000 in cash, four guns, and heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana.
The investigation focused on street-level dealers who were working independently, though police said nine suspects are members of the Greenway Block Killers or Zhoove gangs, police said.
“We’re doing everything we can, and we want to make sure we keep these people from coming in here and taking over and trying to sell drugs,” Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Cheryl Doubt said.
