CHARLEROI, Pa. —
A Washington County man accused of abusing his 3-year-old daughter remains in jail Thursday.
Charleroi police Detective Eric Porter said Derek Fragello is accused of abusing his daughter after she broke a few of his cigarettes.
"There's a fine line between discipline and abuse -- and that line was definitely crossed in this situation," Porter said.
According to Porter, Fragello told investigators that he was disciplining his daughter. However, Porter said Fragello didn't stop until the girl had bruises.
"Doctors said there were some severe contusions to the backside and back of the legs," Porter said.
Detectives said the child's grandmother noticed the injuries while swimming and alerted police.
When the child was taken to an emergency room, authorities alerted Child Youth Services, and the investigation began.
Authorities said the young girl's 5-year-old brother tried to help protect her from their father.
"The little brother tried to get his dad to stop and seemed to be very protective of the girl and forthcoming with the investigation," Porter said.
Relatives told Channel 11's Cara Sapida that the two children are in the safe care of their grandmother.
