Police: Possible M-80 explosion reported near Washington County apartment complex

WASHINGTON, Pa. —

Police in Washington County said a firework detnoted late Tuesday night near an apartment complex, damaging a nearby fence.

Investigators said the blast happened on Jefferson Avenue in the city of Washington.

The explosion caused damage to a fence near the Jefferson Place Apartments, police said.

Witnesses originally told Channel 11's Dave Bondy that someone drove by and threw the explosive at them after yelling a racial slur. Police said that's not the case.

"It doesn't appear that the device was meant for anybody or was thrown at anybody. It seems like a random firework detonated," said Washington police Chief Robert Lemons.

Police are still investigating and said they are looking into the possibility that an M-80 was used.

No injuries were reported.
