Quick-thinking teen alerts authorities about Greensburg blaze
GREENSBURG, Pa. —
Firefighters rescued a woman from a Greensburg apartment building Wednesday afternoon thanks in part to a 17-year-old girl..
According to police, Kayla Yusko walking along Highland Avenue with several friends just before 3 p.m. noticed flames and smoke coming from an apartment. She immediately alerted authorities.
“I know Lauren lives up there so I tried going in and up the stairs but the smoke was so bad I had to come out. I just started crying because I felt so bad,” Yusko said. “We just had to wait for help to get here.”
Officials said Lauren Helfer was carried out of the building by several firefighters. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Her condition hasn’t been released.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
