Channel 11 News has learned that a 19-year-old recent graduate of North Allegheny High School died at a college house party over the weekend.
Officials said Emma Munson, of McCandless, was at a party on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University when she fell backward down a flight of stairs and hit her head.
Investigators said Munson’s death was an accident and there will be no investigation because no foul play is expected.
According to Channel 11’s News exchange partners at TribLIVE, Munson was a standout art student at North Allegheny that earned a national gold medal in the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program for her acrylic painting “The Room.”
Several of Munson’s classmates from North Allegheny told Channel 11’s Vince Sims they had the joy of acting and performing with her.
“She was remarkable. She lit up a room whenever she walked in. I don’t think anyone could say anything negative about her,” Spencer Thurman said.
Munson’s acting coach at the Act One Theater School, Karen Cordaro, said she had worked with Munson since she was in the second grade.
“She would come into class and as a teacher, you would feel now the party was going to start. She was just so full of joy, patience, kindness and gentleness,” Cordaro said.
Thurman said Munson’s acting family is planning to sing to honor her memory at her memorial service.
“She wouldn’t want us to be sad for her because she was just so carefree and vibrant. So we are doing that,” Thurman said.
Funeral arrangements for Munson have not yet been announced.
