PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Public School District officials said a student is accused of assaulting a classmate last month at University Prep.
Spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said the incident happened at the school in January after the students had been dismissed for a half-day.
Pugh said the victim, 16, didn't report the crime until Feb. 14.
The district released the following statement: “On Jan. 27, three students unknowingly remained inside the facility in a restricted area of the school building. On Feb. 14, school staff was notified of an alleged assault between the female student and one of the male students. School police shared all information with city police sex assault who is now conducting an investigation."
However, sources told Channel 11 news reporter Renee Kaminski that the two 10th-grade boys told the 11th-grade girl they wanted to show her something in a restricted area behind the auditorium. It was there that the girl said one of the boys sexually assaulted her.
Some students were surprised to hear one of their classmates might have been sexually assaulted on campus.
“I think the school should have notified students’ mothers or given us some information about it,” said one student. “We didn't know.”
District officials told me the boy accused in the assault is no longer in school.
Police continue to investigate.
