A bad boss doesn't just harm the employees he bullies. He damages non-targeted workers as well.

That's according to new research in the Journal of Social Psychology also published in Popular Science magazine.

Hostile behavior toward subordinates, including being rude, ridiculing or publicly criticizing a worker or employing that middle-school favorite, the silent treatment, has a negative impact on the work environment. The impact is felt among those who aren't the intended victims of abuse, the research shows.

233 full-time employees, including teachers, lawyers, government workers, receptionists and electricians were interviewed by reseachers.

KRMG wanted to know if there were any bad boss horror stories. One woman we spoke with says, "My first boss at my first job made me mop the floors in the dark just because she had something against new people."
