Bomb squad removes suspicious package found outside Shadyside business

SHADYSIDE, Pa. —

The bomb squad removed a suspicious package Tuesday afternoon in Shadyside after evacuating nearly a dozen nearby businesses.

Authorities said Sofiane Foura, the manager of Brasserie 33, found a book bag on a bench just after 3 p.m. outside the restaurant on Ellsworth Avenue.

Foura said he didn’t think anything of it until he opened the bag and saw a device with wires inside. He quickly alerted police.

“It was a big orange box with ‘Explosive 14’ on it. It had wires coming off of it and a little electronic device,” Foura said. “It had a bunch of other stuff attached to it, too.”

The bomb squad first used a robot to inspect the bag, authorities said. The bomb squad then removed the bag just before 6 p.m. Authorities said it was taken to a crime lab for analysis.

Officials said the bag had some type of improvised explosive device inside.

Investigators are looking at surveillance video in hopes of finding out who left the bag.

No injuries were reported.
