Officials said a toddler was killed Friday night when a dirt bike he was riding on crashed into another vehicle in Fayette County.
The Fayette County Coroner's Office said Ryan Metz, 2, was wearing no protective equipment at the time of the crash Friday night in Point Marion.
Officials said Ryan was riding on the lap of a 17-year-old when the dirt bike crashed into the side of a sport utility vehicle.
The dirt bike's driver was treated for head injuries. Police said he'd failed to stop at an intersection immediately before the crash.
"I saw the bike here, and I saw other things laying there and then the sheet. I don't like to talk about it. The poor baby," said Don, a witness. "It's a shame. I hate to see that happen to anybody, but it's in God's hands now."
Don lives right next to the intersection where the crash occurred and said the death could have been avoided.
"I know kids like to have fun on bikes, but you don't put a 2-year-old on a bike. I'm sorry, but I'm against it," Don said.
The District Attorney's Office said it is investigating to see if charges are warranted.
The 17-year-old's grandmother, Shirley Johnson, said Ryan would have turned 3 on Tuesday.
"Ryan would have been 3 on Tuesday, and now, that's going to be his funeral. That's an awful way to remember your kid's birthday," Johnson said.
Johnson said her older grandson will physically recover from his injuries, but mentally, he will be devastated.
"It's hard on them," Johnson said about the Metz family. "Anytime you lose a child, it's hard, but when it's something like this, it makes it worse."
Ryan's family didn't have insurance, so the community is pitching in to help pay for his funeral.
